When you give a present to someone, you hope that the receiver likes it and uses it. But, once it is given the new owner decides what to do with it: use it, give it to someone else, or throw it away. Advice and any other feedback is just like a present. Therefore, don’t expect that the recipient will like it or act upon it either as you expected or not at all.
Don’t stay attached to your present! Let go of your advice and even state openly that you are fine with any outcome.
This may seem hard at the beginning but prevents you of staying connected to the advice. Stating openly „I’d do it like that but am fine with you doing it differently“ might actually persuade the recipient to follow your advice. (Simon Sinek)
